I have spent all of my working life in construction drafting, design and project estimating, but when the opportunity presented to seek out a Building Official position, I believed it to be a logical next step in my career evolution.  Also, it was the perfect opportunity to advance in my chosen community where I can raise my family.

I have never experienced blatant sexism in my career, but I am sure it has played some part in past access to positions and applications for jobs.  Although construction is male dominated and I am aware I have always been surrounded by male counterparts through education, training and on job sites, I have proven myself as an individual with my knowledge and dedication to the sector.

Understanding the demands, no matter what part of the sector you are in is key.  The long hours or assigned tasks are not for everyone.  Take initiative and be a sponge as every day will teach you something new.  If you’re lucky you will find a mentor that helps you on your way.
