BUILDING SAFETY MONTH 2026
70
YEARS
OF THE
ONTARIO
BUILDING OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION
May is Building Safety Month
May marks Building Safety Month, a time to recognize the vital role building safety professionals play in protecting our homes, workplaces, and communities. This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate 70 years of the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA). Seven decades of leadership, education, and advocacy in support of safe, code-compliant construction across Ontario.
Formed on March 6, 1956, the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA) was established with the goal of creating an association to strengthen building inspection standards in Ontario, promote uniform regulations and proper legislation, and support the education and professional development of Building Officials. OBOA continues to evolve to support the industry as it changes.
Highlighting the evolving role of building officials, the importance of ongoing training and education, and the continued focus on safety as the industry adapts to change. These are the perspectives shared by Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Rob Flack, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Laura Smith, MPP for Mississauga—Malton, Deepak Anand, and OBOA President John Lane. Their insights emphasize the impact of this work across communities, the shared responsibility of building a safe and resilient future, and the continued support the OBOA provides to Ontario’s building officials through education and professional development.
