The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing is initiating consultations on a proposed change to the Building Code to expand the permitted use of cellular core polyvinyl chloride Drain-Waste-Vent pipe (PVC pipe) to all residential combustible buildings.
Currently, Division B, Article 7.2.5.16. of the Building Code permits the use of cellular core PVC pipe only in residential buildings containing one or two dwelling units or row houses up to three storeys. The proposed change would extend this permission to include residential buildings up to six storeys.
Expanding the permitted use of cellular core PVC pipe could provide market advantages by supporting more cost-effective construction options, while maintaining the minimum Building Code health and safety standards.
These potential Building Code changes may align with the Ministry's objectives to support increased housing supply, by enabling more efficient building practices while maintaining health and safety standards.
The consultation will be posted on the Regulatory Registry for a period of 15 days.
