OBOA has received an update from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing regarding the BCIN examinations. The examinations are expected to transition to the 2024 Ontario Building Code (OBC) effective March 30, 2026.
OBOA is well-positioned to support building practitioners as they prepare for the updated examinations. Our full suite of training courses, including overview courses specifically designed for BCIN exam preparation, aligns with the 2024 OBC and is intended to help candidates confidently prepare for the transition.
The new 2024 OBC includes 1,730 amendments for further harmonization with the 2020 National Construction Codes, including a new "Part 2 - Farm Buildings". As a result, the examinations will include questions on this new Part of the Code, as well as
revisions to existing Parts of the Code, such as 3, 7 and 9.
To support the transition from the 2012 OBC examinations to the 2024 OBC examinations, please note the following important dates:
March 8, 2026 - Final day to book 2012 OBC examinations (These exams will be administered only until March 15, 2026.)
March 15 to March 29, 2026 - No Building Code examinations will be offered (This applies to both in-person and virtually proctored exams.)
March 9, 2026 onward - Only 2024 OBC examinations may be booked (These exams will begin on March 30, 2026.)
Ontario Building Code Study Guides
The Ministry has also posted the examination syllabi for both the 2024 and 2012 Ontario Building Codes. These resources may be helpful for those who plan to self-study in advance of writing their BCIN examinations.
