Municipalities across Canada face critical capacity and efficiency shortages to handle the growing volume of building permit applications, with an estimated 4.5 million permits needed to address the country’s housing gap by 2030 at today’s regulatory standards (CMHC). With only 5,000 building officials nationwide, the current workforce is under immense pressure to process permit reviews accurately and efficiently.
Led by Trax in collaboration with the Building Officials’ Association of B.C., the Ontario Building Officials’ Association, the First Nations National Building Officials’ Association, the University of Waterloo and Simon Fraser University; this project aims to train 2,500 municipal building, fire and planning officials across Canada to leverage AI technologies that streamline permit reviews, improve accuracy and accelerate approvals.
The training will equip municipal staff with essential AI skills that enhance public sector capacity and foster the adoption of AI-assisted workflows; as well as expedite housing development and benefit local communities through faster project approvals. The curriculum will include modules on AI fundamentals and ethics; hands-on training with building code AI tools like Trax Codes; awareness of computer vision tools for remote inspections; and practical applications for streamlining code compliance.
The training will be delivered by the consortium’s professional association partners to their members. CPDP credit will be provided.
