We invite you to participate in an important survey regarding the current travel distance requirements outlined in the building code. The City of Calgary is conducting this study as part of a research project for the National Research Council Canada. The information collected will inform future research on this topic.

We want your input to gain valuable insights into how these requirements are applied in practice, their impact on safety, and opportunities for improvement. Your feedback may contribute to shaping potential code changes.

Why Your Input Matters

Your expertise and insights are invaluable in assessing how these requirements impact safety, design, and innovation. The survey aims to gather perspectives on:

  • The effectiveness and challenges of prescriptive travel distance requirements.

  • Experiences with performance-based approaches and alternative solutions.

  • Opportunities for improvement in evaluating and applying these provisions.

  • How current practices influence safety outcomes, project efficiency, and compliance processes.

Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with articles 3.4.2.4. and 3.4.2.5. of National Building Code 2020, including the attributions and intent statements. This information is provided in the attached document or accessed by clicking the links below.
