Updates to Ontario's Building Code

Creating a Process for Equivalency Assessments for Building Officials:

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing amended the Ontario Building Code (O.Reg. 163/24) through the Ontario Amendment Document dated January 13, 2025, to create a process for the ministry to conduct equivalency assessments for building officials who have been certified in Manitoba.

This change to Division C, Part 3, Section 3.1 provides suitably qualified applicants with a pathway to practise in Ontario. It will make it easier to recruit, train and retain building officials and help address building official shortages, particularly in northern Ontario communities within close proximity to the Manitoba border.

Additional information and program guidelines are available on www.ontario.ca/page/equivalency-assessments-building-officials

Additional Regulatory Amendments to the Building Code:

A new version of the digital 2024 Building Code Compendium that includes these amendments as well as other housekeeping changes is now available and can be requested online www.ontario.ca/page/2024-ontario-building-code.

The ministry will continue to update the building code and provide information on any changes made through CodeNews e-mails as well as through updates to ontario.ca. Previous updates to the Code are also available on the Building Code updates page www.ontario.ca/page/building-code-updates#section-2.
