The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing will transition all Building Code examinations to the 2024 Building Code (OBC) beginning Monday, March 30, 2026. Candidates have been able to book exam dates for the new 2024 OBC exams since Monday, March 9, 2026.
Preparing for the New Exams
To support candidates prepare for this transition, they are encouraged to visit Humber Polytechnic’s OBC Examination News website, which provides ongoing updates and links to the Ministry’s Study Guides.
Candidates are also encouraged to download the latest version of the digital 2024 Building Code Compendium and the associated 2024 Amendment Packages from the Publications Ontario webpage. The latest versions of the 2024 Building Code Compendium are now printable and copyable to support both exam preparation and day‑to‑day work.
Exam Registration and Support
For questions about exam registration, candidates should contact Humber Polytechnic directly at OBCTesting@humber.ca. For information on qualification and registration requirements, they may visit our webpage Become a registered building practitioner.
Please note that while the exams have been updated, other aspects remain unchanged – candidates will continue to be expected to answer 70 questions in 3 hours, 70% remains the threshold for a passing grade, exams will remain “open book” and can be accessed virtually online either at a location of their convenience or at an approved testing centre. Humber Polytechnic encourages candidates to contact them if their preferred testing centre is not listed.
As has been the case previously, there is no requirement for building practitioners to re-qualify for exams they have passed under an older edition of the Building Code. For example, if a candidate passed “House 2012”, they do not need to pass “House 2024” to continue to submit and/or enforce permit applications for houses.
