The OBOA is pleased to announce the launch of a new course series called OBOA-ITS (Inspectors Technique Suite). Developed in partnership with RSM Building Consultants, this suite of online courses provides practical skills to help new building inspectors transition to their new role, but also offers insightful tips for seasoned building officials.

“These courses focus on the ‘how’,” says Director of Education, Jonathan DeWeerd. “New hires are equipped with the technical knowledge they receive in school, but we wanted a course that teaches more soft skills and helps them understand the process of building inspections.”

The course series includes five courses:

  • Introduction, Footings, and Foundations
  • Framing and Fire Separations
  • Insulation, Air Barriers, and Energy Efficiency
  • Occupancy and Final Inspections
  • Building Services focusing on Plumbing and HVAC systems

Introduction, Footings and Foundations will launch on Monday, Nov. 13th, with the others being rolled out over the next year.

When enrolled in the course, students are walked through the inspection process from start to finish. They learn what to expect when entering a job site, and how to speak with contractors and other professionals while learning the process of completing thorough and detailed inspections.

The content includes reference slides, checklists, and videos showing experienced Building Officials completing inspections, giving students a first-hand view.

Gerald Moore, CEO of RSM Building Consultants created the course to provide a consistent approach for all building officials in how they conduct inspections throughout all of Ontario. “Consistency in inspections will help the building industry, as an inspection in Windsor will be the same as in Thunder Bay,” he says.

Each course can be completed individually, and graduates will receive a certificate and six OBOA CPDP (Continuing Professional Development Program) credits per course. Building Officials who hold a CBCO (Certified Building Code Official) designation can use these credits towards maintaining their provincially recognized designation. To sign up for OBOA-ITS view the OBOA Training Calendar.
